Patterson Mill High School opened in 2007 and most middle and high school students in the area now attend that facility.

There are numerous historic buildings throughout the area. Some of the more well-known include the Bush Tavern, a 1778 town seat in Washington County, and Black's Fort (1774), a settlers' refuge from Cherokee attacks during the American Revolution.

During the colonial period, Abingdon was a busy and prosperous small town with a wide variety of small businesses, including silversmiths and gunsmiths. It was the first town in the country to have a weekly newspaper, the Abingdon Patriot, and it was also the site of one of the earliest silk hat factories in America.

A meeting in late 1924 of the Abingdon Improvement Association focused on a number of things that residents would take for granted today, such as paved roads and telephone service. One issue that arose was fire protection, and it was agreed that the town needed to establish its own fire company.

The idea was to establish a fire brigade, which was meant to provide a first line of defense until the arrival of the nearest fire company from Bel Air or Aberdeen. In time the idea evolved into a fire company, and in 1925 the Abingdon Volunteer Fire Department was formed.

During the Revolutionary War, settlers at the tavern signed the "Bush Declaration," calling for independence from England. And Count Rochambeau, Washington's French ally in the Revolutionary War, brought thousands of troops through Abingdon on their way to and from Yorktown.

In the 1970's, the fire company began to feel the effects of a new master zoning plan for the county designed to manage future industrial and residential development. It was during this time that the company decided to increase the resources available to it. This included the addition of a third fire station located in the Edgewood area of Willoughby Beach, the purchase of two additional engines to replace old trucks, the replacement of the light duty rescue truck with a heavy duty one, and a tanker with enhanced pumping capabilities. In addition to these changes, the men also decided to wear protective clothing when fighting fires. This was a very progressive move for the time.
